Workshop weekend (GEWEEST)

The Classic Jamming workshop weekend is a two-days improvisation-intenstive on the 21st and 22nd of October, 2023. It takes place in the beautiful Oranjerie in Groningen. During the weekend, the participants get acquainted with inspiring teachers, who give insight in different ways of improvising. Meanwhile, the participants are challenged with improvisation assignments. At night there is an open jam session. Food is included in the price.

About the teachers

Arman Ameri Mahani – Indian Raga
Arman is an Iranian musician, who specializes in Raga in India. He is a vocalist and sarinda player. During his master in Groningen he developed the concept ‘Sonic Sama’. In a guided musical meditation session he introduces the Indian Raga in a unique way. Musicians get acquainted with Indian scales and learn how to use them in improvising. This meditative form of improvising gives the musicians a chance to get into the right mind-set for the rest of the weekend.

Michael Moore – Instant Composing
Michael Moore is an experienced saxophonist, clarinet player and improviser from the US. As a jazz musician and composer he offers a lot of insights on different approaches to improvising. In this workshop he gives the musicians tools for ‘instant composing’. The participants learn how to broaden their personal musical vocabulary, hoe to make instant musical choices and how to create good communication with other musicians.

Jan Ruerd Oosterhaven – The Improv-machine

In his workshop Jan Ruerd offers a transformative journey into the art of creating music in the ‘here and now’. Musicians learn to break free from constraints and tap into their intuition, creating music in the present moment with authenticity and freedom. Jenifer Yáñez Villahermosa – Comedy improv for musicians

In this workshop, participants will get a glimpse into Improvisational theatre - a genre in which actors create the characters, dialogues, and reality of a scene on the spot, based on simple suggestions. To be able to do this, actors work on their ability to be in the present moment by listening actively, and to react to their partner’s ideas by accepting them and supporting them, learning to trust themselves and each other along the way, and to embrace mistakes or unexpected outcomes in a positive way: key elements for being a better improv musician too! By exploring this genre through theatre games and using the same skills in musical exercises, participants will understand the connection between these two performing realms in a dynamic and entertaining manner, and will be provided with a new set of improv tools to apply both in their daily lives and while playing their instrument

This workshop focuses on bringing new elements to your playing. We are going to experiment with the sounds we can produce in our instruments, exploring texture, effects, articulation, etc; and forget all about melody!
